More woes for Shanghai Shenhua, as the financially beleaguered club may be about to lose one of its star players, and assistant coach, Nicolas Anelka.
Shenhua, despite its dramatic spending spree on Premier League stars Anelka and former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, has reportedly not paid players for quite some time. The negative atmosphere such a situation naturally creates in a club is apparently taking its toll on Anelka, who the Daily Mirror describes as “unhappy after failing to settle [in Shanghai]”.
West Ham boss Sam Allardyce, for whom Anelka played under at Bolton Wanderers, is allegedly keen to bring the French striker back to the Premier League. West Ham may not be able to match Shenhua’s financial clout however:
They worry that although the French striker is ready to accept a cut in his stunning £250,000-a-week Shanghai wages, he will still demand way more than they can afford.
Anelka’s team-mate Drogba has returned to the UK to train with Chelsea ahead of the African Nations Cup, sparking speculation that he too may be looking for an exit from Shenhua.
