The week that started with Macau’s first Ultimate Fighting competition has ended with two deaths in the city’s world famous Grand Prix. Portugese motorcyclist Luis Filipe de Sousa Carreira crashed during a qualifying race on Thursday and Hong Kong driver Phillip Yau Wing-choi died after hitting a barrier at more than 124 mph during a race on Friday.
Despite the fatalities, race organizers are determined to continue with the GP. Al Jazeera interviewed race coordinator Joao Manuel Costa Antunes, who said that “it is not very pleasant to have two accidents in two days [but] We don’t consider suspending any races.” This is the 59th Macau GP, which is the only international street race event that features both cars and motorcycles.
