Every few days our team will scour Shanghai’s dining scene for scrumptious dishes that’ll fill your belly without emptying your savings. Not to discriminate, we’ll search everywhere from bicycle carts to chic venues with twenty-course tasting menus, knowing that any spot could have the next Dish of the Day.
When you’re hungover you need something fast and nearby that also has all the food groups on one plate so you don’t have to mix and match dishes using your alcohol-misted judgement.
For me, that something is “Good Fortune Characteristic Spring Fried Rice” (20RMB) at Chunfu Shui Jia in Xujiahui. Now, the mention of fried rice might make you think of that block of stubby brown rice, just-thawed peas and carrots, chicken cubes, and oil greasy enough to power a motor scooter – a dish that you’re used to drunkenly gobbling out of a carton in front of the TV in the US or Europe. Chunfu’s rice is anything but that.
It’s a luscious compilation of rice, salted and fresh greens, eggs, onions, peppers, and pork strips. The fresh eggs are scrambled quickly at high heat, rendering them fluffy and delicious, and the oil is clean-tasting and therefore doesn’t give you that sickly, bloated feeling. The rice is the culinary equivalent of Rogue from X-Men, absorbing the flavor of each ingredient it touches.
Before even taking a bite, you can tell the fried rice is good by its kaleidoscope of colors, a characteristic absent from normal fried rices, which are generally drab and greasy-looking. And don’t worry, the portion size is heaping; more than enough to relieve even the fiercest of hangover munchies. So next time you’re feeling that post-drunken fog, head to Chunfu for some pick-me-up.
