SINA English brings us the above photo, accompanied by the slightly sanctimonious (and grammatically questionable) headline “Uncivilized behaviours on newly operated Hangzhou subway”.
Rather than shake our heads in disgust however, we should question, if what these people are doing is so far away from accepted norms according to state media, then why are subway staff not doing more to prevent such behaviour?
While people could enjoy the convenience and comfort brought by new transportation, some passengers, shouting, eating, fighting and even pissing in the carriage, ruined the good spirits.
Proper signage displaying regulations backed up by swift punishments can do wonders for improving people’s behaviour. Complaining about the “uncivilized” behaviour of people outside of Beijing and Shanghai smacks of snobbery. People can’t follow the norms of acceptable subway behaviour if they aren’t told what they are.
