A police officer in Nanjing rescues a young woman who had jumped from a bridge in a failed attempt at suicide.
Early on Tuesday morning in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, a taxi driver saw a young woman leap over the railings of a bridge into the icy waters below.
The taxi driver and a number of other passers-by raised the alarm and soon a police car arrived at the scene. Seeing the woman struggling in the fast moving river below, one of the police officers stripped off his clothes and, hanging from a rope attached to the bridge, entered the river to rescue the woman. The officer, surnamed Chang, despite being in his 50s, spared no thought for his own safety as he plunged into the river in temperatures of only a few degrees Celsius.
After the woman was pulled out of the river, it became apparent that one of the people who had raised the alarm was her boyfriend, with whom she had reportedly argued before leaping from the bridge.
Officer Chang strips off his clothes, entering the icy river in only a life-jacket.
Officer Chang is lowered into the river suspended from a rope held by his colleagues.
Officer Chang reaches the attempted suicide.
Calling for his colleagues to pull them up, Officer Chang holds on tightly to the distraught young woman.
Passers-by and police join together to haul the pair from the river.
The rescued woman is treated by emergency services.
