The second-best Chongqing scandal of the year continues to grow, as authorities in the city have pledged to carry out a thorough investigation into an alleged sex-tape-blackmail ring that has already brought down one official.
The Chongqing Municipal Committee for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China said it will not tolerate officials’ misconduct, each of the reported cases will be investigated and each official involved will be punished.
Lei Zhengfu, the top official of a district in Chongqing, was removed from his post last week after an investigation by the Chongqing Municipal Committee for Discipline Inspection confirmed that he was the man featured in a sex tape widely circulated online.
The discipline watchdog’s pledge came as media reports said a whistleblower in the case alleged that he had video footage of five other senior officials in Chongqing also engaged in sexual acts.
Zhu Ruifeng, the investigative reporter who blew the lid on the story, claims that the four other officials implicated all currently remain in their positions. Zhu has reportedly asked Beijing police for protection, saying his life has been threatened since he first released the video of Lei Zhengfu.
According to Zhu’s police source, the mistress was hired by a property developer with the intention of blackmailing Lei because he would not grant the developer any construction projects. The woman allegedly filmed two clips, totalling 80 minutes, of her having sex with Lei.
The developer allegedly used the videos to secure project contracts in 2009, but Lei confessed his impropriety to the Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, who put the developer in jail for a year and detained the mistress for a month, the source told Zhu.
Sex videos featuring the other five party officials were found in the developer’s home when Wang [Lijun] sent police to raid it. The developer was also found to have hired many beautiful young women to become mistresses of party officials, The Beijing News reported. Zhu said his source also gave him notes about the developer’s interrogation, including details about officials’ decadent lifestyles.
