We’ve all had a good laugh at the idiots on Literally Unbelievable who post outraged Facebook statuses over clearly satirical Onion headlines, but now, the People’s Daily, China’s newspaper of record, has fallen into the trap of thinking the Onion is real news service.
We’ve saved the headline for posterity ahead of its surely imminent removal from the Daily‘s English language site:
U.S. website The Onion has named North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un as the “Sexiest Man Alive for the year 2012”.
“With his devastatingly handsome, round face, his boyish charm, and his strong, sturdy frame, this Pyongyang-bred heartthrob is every woman’s dream come true. Blessed with an air of power that masks an unmistakable cute, cuddly side, Kim made this newspaper’s editorial board swoon with his impeccable fashion sense, chic short hairstyle, and, of course, that famous smile,” it said.
“He has that rare ability to somehow be completely adorable and completely macho at the same time,” said Marissa Blake-Zweiber, editor of The Onion Style and Entertainment.
The Daily then illustrates Jong-Un’s sexiness with a 55-page slideshow of his best moments.
Update #1: Just so the Daily’s humiliation is complete, Adam Minter brings us this screencap of the gaff on the paper’s homepage:
Update #2: Cheer up People’s Daily staffers! The Korea Times also demonstrated a complete inability to detect satire:
Update #3: It has been pointed out to us that the Korean-language headline acknowledges that the Onion award is satirical, but for some reason the English version of the article seems to be taking it seriously.
The Onion has responded to the coverage of their award, congratulating their colleagues in the Chinese state media.
