Yao Ming, retired NBA basketball star, owner of the Shanghai Sharks, and really tall guy, has today been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Hong Kong.
Doctor Yao, a Shanghai native, is being recognised for his “distinguished service and commitment to the University, the community, and to academia.” In particular, his contributions to HIV/AIDS awareness across China. In 2008, he invited AIDS orphans to the Beijing Olympics.
Burma’s pro-democracy and opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, wearing full academic dress, was also presented with an honorary degree last week.
Suu Kyi was made an Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences, at the Rose Cottage, her home in Burma’s capital Nay Pyi Taw.
