No one is expected to defend Red Dawn. It has achieved a 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 5.7 on IMDb, and the official Shanghaiist thumbs-down. It has been panned as factually ludicrous, racist, and insultingly bad. Recent protesters in Times Square, however, are angry because the movie demonizes the “happy, friendly [North Koreans, where] everyone loves their country.”
The protesters in the video include members of the Workers World Party, Occupy Wall Street, and the Korean Friendship Association. The Korean Friendship Association (or KFA, for the casual DPRK-sympathizer) is a foundation run by the North Korean government to promote Juche and the image of the DPRK abroad. The KFA has been around since 2000, has 15,000 members, and in 2005 earned the title of “Kim Jong-il’s ‘useful idiots’ in the West. It also has” classy membership cards.
