If anyone needed confirmation that Tibet and Ai Weiwei are on completely different levels of sensitivity; CCTV have interviewed Elton John just days after he controversially dedicated his Beijing concert to the dissident artist. In stark contrast to the fallout that followed Bjorks 2009 ‘Tibet’ chants, Elton does not seem to have spent much time at all in the naughty corner. The Global Times, which condemned John’s Ai dedication whilst accurately predicting that “the news caused by Elton John was only fleeting”, will have mixed feelings.
CCTV presenter, UNAIDS ambassador and consummate English gentleman James Chau gave the interview, as he has given several Elton John interviews before. Elton managed to restrain himself and kept strictly to AIDS related topics, calling for more people to show compassion towards sufferers.
