St. Louis arch be damned, Shenfu New Town in Fushun is building a Circle of Life (also known as the Ring of Life) as a landmark for its newly designed downtown. Designed by the same architects as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the ring is constructed from 3,000 tons of steel and will illuminate at night with 12,000 LED lights. The circle’s construction is complete, and should welcome visitors by the end of this year.
The building will function as an observation deck and tourist’s site: there were originally hopes to include a bungee jumping platform, but (unfortunately) this was deemed too dangerous. Los Angeles design firm Rhetroactive has aided with much of the design process and the ring’s branding. Images courtesty of their website show the circle in construction. Whether or not Disney sues over the “Circle of Life” thing will remain to be seen.
Clarification: This project was developed by themed entertainment consultant Goddard Group. Former Creative Director, Steve Trowbridge, who recently spun off into his newly formed Los Angeles firm RHETROACTIVE, lead the project design and worked in conjunction with the Project Architect ECADI and other various entertainment design consultants to develop the design and branding.
