Rescue efforts are underway in north eastern Heilongjiang province after a flood in a mine late on Saturday night left fourteen men trapped underground.
Twenty-two men were working in the mine when the accident happened at Furuixiang Coal Mine in Qitaihe. Six miners managed to escape early on according to local government sources, while a further two were pulled from the mine later on. However, fourteen miners remain trapped underground following the accident, in which the mine was flooded by 4,000 metric tons of water.
Local authorities have mobilised over 200 rescuers and medical personnel to save the men, but warn that pumping the water out of the mine could take a considerable amount of time. The mine owner has been placed under surveillance and his assets frozen while authorities assess the cause of the accident.
