Taiwan is going to host a controversial Chinese music event that categorizes music as either ‘Mainland’ or ‘Hong Kong and Taiwan’, which critics say implies Taiwan is a province of China, undermining Taiwanese independence.
A meeting is being held today by the Chinese Nationalist Party – Chinese Communist Party (KMT-CCP) platform to decide whether Taipei will host the 20th Chinese Music Awards. However the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) claims that the decision has already been made to hold the event at Taipei Arena as a mainland tourist agency is already offering tour packages.
The statement was made by TSU whip Huang Wen-ling, although he did not cite his sources. Concerns are focused on the close ties between the government and the events Taiwanese organizers Taipei Artist Agency Association (TAAA).
The Chinese event organizers already announced on Thursday that the music awards would take place in Taipei on December 29th before the application was formally approved.
The event has only been held overseas twice, in 2002 and 2005, when it was held in the US.
