A 900 gram piece of isinglass, a form of collagen derived from the dried bladders of fish, will be auctioned at the Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Centre. Bidding will open at 1.5 million yuan.
This particular isinglass is derived from the bladder of a Chinese Bahaba. A critically endangered fish which is protected by law in mainland China (though not in Hong Kong), the Bahaha is nevertheless still subject to sever e overfishing due to its extremely high value.
Consumption of isinglass is believed to carry many health benefits and is often used in traditional Chinese medicine.
