On the morning of December 11th, at the Chaoyang District Huizhong Road intersection in Beijing, traffic police decided to “correct” the “Chinese-style” of crossing the road (i.e. walking wherever you damn well please regardless of traffic). In 30 minutes police officers had handed out 10 yuan tickets to 19 people who all crossed in contravention of the red light.
The jaywalkers should also receive some sort of fine for stupidity, since they crossed the street illegally in front of police officers who were handing out tickets for doing just that.
Jaywalking laws are stupid, and while Shanghaiist doesn’t want to encourage breaking the law in any way you should be able read between the lines here, but don’t break the law in front of police officers, that is never a good idea.
