Midweek Music Preview is a rundown of all the events happening on stages across Shanghai. On the docket this week: A gorgeous week of interesting live bands. For the fans of razorsharp, hard J-Rock, YYT “celebrates” the approaching 2012 doomsday tonight, so watch out! Give Band play once more on Thursday and it’s good that they do, their unique sound is always welcome. 390 hosts White+ and three support bands on Friday night, while Casino Demon are up to wreck YYT. On the weekend, watch out for the “This is not the End” event and the Lanterns. And guess what, there will be another Midweek Music Preview AFTER doomsday. Boy am I glad when I don’t have to listen to people blabbering about that fucking Maya calendar crap any longer. 2013, we are waiting for you. Peace out. And if that’s still not enough, head over to our calendar for more.
2012 Rock Doomsday @ Yutintang
What an apocalyptic title. The end of days is approaching, and YYT welcomes it with a dark visual kei rock event. LILITH, V.A.L.A. and BeatGeneration1980s will rock the stage. In case you have no idea what visual kei is: a (mostly) Japanese rock genre where costumes and makeup of the musicians takes an important part in the shows. Think Marilyn Manson and David Bowie’s bastard child meets Kabuki theater meets metal. LILITH and V.A.L.A. are Shanghai-based bands that shared the stage with Under Code label boss and J-Rock veteran Kisaki in the past. Could be a refreshingly different night.

Give Band (给乐队) @ Yuyintang
Local electro rockers Give Band are back again for a showcase of their synthesizer-pimped sound. If you want a taste of their songs now, click here. Pretty cool stuff!

WHITE+ @ 390 Shanghai
Beijing rockers White+ will play at 390 together with Dog God, Xiaoxin YiYi and Stalin Gardens. The latter will need to work again on Saturday night at YYT. White+ sound is experimental with a good dose of electronic infusion. Here’s a short video with an interview (Chinese) and some live footage. Definitely a concert worth to check out.

Casino Demon China Tour @ Yuyintang
Indie punks Casino Demon are back with their new EP “Have you seen stars like this?” (你见过这样的星星吗？). Since the formation in 2004, the raunchy, playful boys from Beijing made it to the concert stages in America and back, so it’s your chance to see if they still got their charm.

This is not the End @ Yuyintang
So now doomsday is called off or what? Meh. But hey, at least YYT makes sure that you get lotsa bang for the 50 kuai with DUCK FIGHT GOOSE, BOYS CLIMBING ROPES*, Battle Cattle, Stalin Gardens and S.V.R.O on stage.

The Lanterns @ Yuyintang
Shanghai rockers the Lanterns (Lanting) look back at a toubled history: Founded in 2001, the guys chose to go separate ways in 2005. In 2010 they came back together in Mao right at the beginning of the Expo. We always suspected the Shanhai Expo served a purpose, now we have the truth. Their calm and melodic rock is a welcome addition to the Shanghai music scene. And they’re productive again, their second album is expected to be released soon. Listen to songs here.
