Taiyuan Police Chief Li Yali is under investigation for allegedly covering up his son’s drink-driving and subsequent assault on a traffic police officer. He was removed from his positions as Police Chief and Party Secretary of Taiyuan’s Public Security Bureau after video evidence of the incident was posted online.
According to assaulted traffic police officer Xia Kun, the son, Li Zhengyuan, started beating Xia after he was intercepted and demanded to leave his vehicle license behind. Three other police officers arrived at the scene to control Li, and gave him a blood-alcohol test which revealed he had been drink-driving. Yet instead of being arrested, he was escorted home by police officers.
Not knowing that Li was the son of the city’s Police Chief, Xia filed a report about the incident. He came under pressure to omit details about Li in his report, and was later offered a bribe. Following his refusal, his mother also received a threatening mobile phone message about sending him to jail.
