Taobao is China’s largest e-commerce platform, with more than 500 million users selling 800 million products at any given time. Until a US government announcement on Thursday, it was also considered one of the world’s largest sources of pirated and counterfeit goods. Citing the company’s commitment “to further reduce the listings of counterfeit products” the Office of the United States Trade Representative have removed Taobao from its list of “Notorious Markets.”
Taobao may be getting cleared a bit early: try searching for Coach or Louis Vuitton on the website and you’ll still find plenty of results. Nevertheless, Taobao now joins Baidu and Sogou as formerly-notorious sites that have (somewhat) gone straight. To see the full Notorious Markets list, check out the USTR website.
