Taiwan’s tourism bureau is poised to welcome this year’s 7 millionth foreign guest to Taiwan today, setting a new record high. The previous record stands at 6.08 million tourists in 2011.
The lucky tourist will receive 70 gifts worth 200,000 NTD including plane tickets, hotel vouchers, a laptop and a bicycle at a ceremony at the Executive Yuan on December 19th.
The Tourism Bureau predicts that 7.2 million foreigners will visit Taiwan by the end of 2012, 18% more than visited in 2011. Taiwan welcomed 4.39 million foreign visitors in 2009 and 5.56 million visitors in 2010, according to official figures.
The Taiwanese tourist industry has developed substantially in recent years, even creating tailor made ‘Life of Pi’ tours to promote locations on the island used in filming.
