Now that Shinzo Abe (aka China’s least favourite person) is in Japan’s driving seat, he is heading straight for a fight. Although he may have been the lesser of two evils for all concerned, it is not going to be a smooth ride as Japan comes to terms with its continuing decline into China’s shadow.
Abe, whose campaign focused on foreign affairs despite the numerous more pressing domestic problems in Japan, was quick to issue a statement regarding Japanese sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands. The BBC reports:
Speaking of the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, Mr Abe said: “We own and actively control the islands, about this point there is no room to negotiate.”
During the election campaign, Mr Abe’s party suggested it might move to build a port and other facilities on the disputed islands to reinforce Japan’s control.
Abe has made it perfectly clear that Japan is not going to tolerate China’s claims to the Islands or the threat posed to Japanese nationals and their businesses in China.
If neither newbie (Xi or Abe) wants to seem the weaker party then we might find out the answer to the age old question: Who would win in a fight… Godzilla or a dragon?
