The [email protected] Shanghai Grand Theatre
The Nutcracker is a typical stage candidate for Christmas time, and apparently Shanghai makes no exception. Derrick Dean (ex British National Ballet art director) is responsible for this Shanghai incarnation of Tchaikovski’s ballet classic.
80-680RMB // 7:15pm // Shanghai Grand Theatre // No. 300 Renmin Da Dao, near Huangpi Bei Lu (人民大道300号, 近黄陂北路)
Christmas Dinner @ PIRO
They can do so much more than just charbroiling those awesome burgers. Pouring egg nog for example. The Christmas dinner is a generous selection of American holiday dishes (anyone surprised?) and sucks a gaping 400RMB hole in your wallet. But it comes with free flow egg nog, wines, beers, sangria and soft drinks. Make sure you have somebody help you wobble home. An alternative would be Big Bamboo. Their Christmas dinner is only 188RMB per person, but probably without the open drink fountain.
400RMB // 6pm & 8:30pm // 91 Changshu Lu, near Changle Lu (常熟路91号, 近长乐路)
X-Mas @ Mural
Live salsa band, one free drink of your choice and free flow mulled wine all night for just 50RMB sounds just like the best Christmas deal in town. If you feel like dancing to salsa, you know where to go. Might become difficult to pull off the hot moves after a few glass of mulled wine, though.
50RMB incl. one drink + free flow mulled wine // 9pm // New Mural // B/F, 10 Hengshan Lu, near Yongjia Lu, 衡山10号, 近永嘉路
‘Rock City’ Christmas Eve Concert @ MAO Livehouse
MAO’s very own take on a cheerful Christmas Eve. It’s gonna be rocky, but that goes without saying. Top Floor Circus and Da Fresh will be at your service with live music. Both Chinese bands play very approachable rock. TFC is pretty straightforward alternative, while Da Fresh certainly live up to their name with their poppier synthie sound and clean vocals. They’re really good at what they’re doing. Probably a good combination for Christmas. In order to spread even more Christmas spirit, there will be a lucky draw with some awesome prices: 3 iPads AND 20 four days 3 nights Hong Kong – Macao trips for two – wow!
120RMB pre-sale and students, 150RMB door // 8:30pm // Mao Livehouse // 3/F, 308 Chongqing Nan Lu, near Jianguo Zhong Lu3/F, (重庆南路308号 近建国中号)
Anti-Christ Mass @ INFERNO
How do you like yourself some warming Jägermeister for 20 kuai a shot? Inferno’s got the hot stuff, as well as Inferno-like music for a merry Christmas gettogether. Rough and rocky fun.
9pm // No. 480 Yongjia Lu, near Yueyang Lu (永嘉路480号, 近岳阳路)
Orphaned in Shanghai @ The Boxing Cat Brewery (Sinan Mansions)
Not sure who they’re trying to address with that awkward party name, but free flow drinks, lucky draws, desserts and other treats for 250RMB sounds like fun.
250RMB // 6pm // The Boxing Cat Sinan Mansions, Unit 26A, 519 Fuxing Zhong Lu, near Sinan Lu (思南公馆, 复兴中路519号26A, 近思南路)
Double Happyxmas @ DADA
Dada’s open on December 24 & 25, so if you’re suffering from withdrawal symptoms, be informed that they’ll welcome you with open doors and party spirit on both days. “Rocking around the Christmas Tree” and “Last Christmas” not to be expected. Phew.
Free // 9pm // Dada // No. 115 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu (幸福路115号, 近法华镇路)
Christmas Movie Night @ Roosevelt Sky Bar
Christmas movie screenings and selected cocktails and beer all night at Roosevelt Sky Bar for just 98RMB is quite a treat. You’ve heard right, all you can drink. Which should help to make every movie enjoyable. Not sure whether it will be busy since most people probably don’t wanna watch movies on Christmas Eve (hence the price tag?), but we dare to call it a hot deal for good drinks and movies.
98RMB // 9pm // The House of Roosevelt, 9/F, 27 Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu, near Beijing Dong Lu 中山东一路27号9楼, 近北京东路)
Angel Christmas Party @ Obama Club
Angel Christmas party for the gay crowd, hosted by the notorious Club Obama monstrosity. 100RMB get you in plus three drinks, which should help to make the interior look better (a tiny bit).
100RMB incl. 3 drinks // 10pm // Obama // 2088 Yan’an Xi Lu, near Xianxia Lu (延安西路2088号, 近仙霞路)
Merry Christmas Party @ Phebe
OMG, the 2D club is throwing a Christmas party. You know what, if we trust a place to turn it into a blinking Christmas nightmare, then it’s gotta be them. They promise dancers and snow flakes and the chance to win an iphone 5 and an ipad mini. And if it’s still unbearable, remember there should be open bar for 100RMB. Dec 24&25.
Free to get in, 100RMB open bar // 9pm // Phebe 3D Club // No. 10 Hengshan Lu, near Gao’an Lu (衡山路10号,高安路)
Mix the City @ Live Bar
What can you do to make Red Bull more drinkable? Mix in vodka or jägermeister. Let’s be honest that stuff is nasty shit and everything added is an improvement. Air Walker (云踪者), Mantou and Revival play live on stage, and Live Bar stuff mixes your poison.
20RMB incl. one drink // 9pm // Live Bar // 800 Guoshun Dong Lu, near Shuangyang Lu (国顺东路800号 近双阳路)
Christmas Market @ Xintiandi
The Christmas market with all its snack and gift booths is still open until January 1st. Suck up some Christmas spirit (and mulled wine). On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, the entrance fee is a hefty 120RMB, so you might wanna avoid going on those days.

The Nightmare at Christmas @ Shanghai Grand Theatre
This year, Santa doesn’t bring joy and presents, but the angel of death in form of a poisonous pill. Based on the story “The Black Spectacles”, the Nightmare at Christmas is set to add some darkness and mystery in the otherwise bright and candy-filled night. A man tries to prove the innocence of his niece by staging a poisoning. Originally intending to prove that the observations of eye-witnesses are unreliable, his recreation becomes a bit too perfect…

fat Christmas turkeys skinny dancing poultry, you have the chance to see the ballet on Tuesday and Wednesday.
