A woman has raised the ire of netizens by verbally abusing a migrant labourer on a public bus. The incident occurred on the 28th December when the two sat next to each other on the 825 bus in the Sichuan city of Chengdu. The labourer, who was around 50 and wearing clothes covered with dust and paint, got on and sat down next to a woman of around 60, described as wearing ‘fashionable clothes’. The man was careful to only sit on half of the seat so he didn’t get his dirty clothes too close to the woman.
Initially the woman just scowled at the man and shifted her body tight up against the window to avoid touching him. However after the swaying motion of the bus caused him to brush against her, she exploded in anger.
She shouted at the man: “Your clothes are so dirty, you should not take the bus”. Then, when he failed to respond she got angrier and said “you should walk home!”
When the worker retorted that the woman had no right to say such things to him, she got angrier and the couple began to argue loudly, with other passengers around them chiming in to criticise the woman for her actions.
They continued to argue until a young schoolchild reportedly said to the woman: “If there weren’t any migrant workers then we wouldn’t have this city，you look down on them so much but if they don’t come any construct our city then what are you going to do?”
The incident was posted on Weibo by user @范大洲 and quickly received thousands of comments from outraged netizens, almost all of whom criticised the woman. @小爷不是非洲大脸妹 echoed the complaint of the young student: “If there were no migrant workers then where we would get out comfortable houses, where would we have such beautiful cities, they help us by building whilst they themselves have nowhere to live”. @伊雷YY said “It can only be that people look down on migrant workers so much because they do not consider them to be human”.
