After the British football press collectively failed to do the slightest research on Shanghai Shenhua when they breathlessly reportedly that the financially troubled club (which can’t afford its current internationals let alone a new one) would be buying David Beckham, it’s nice to see some rational reporting on the matter.
The SCMP (paywall) reports, surprising no-one (at least, no-one in China), that Beckham is “unlikely” to go to Shenhua, primarily because they haven’t even approached him.
Bringing to an end new speculation that the former Manchester United star was considering a move to the Chinese team, Shenhua never approached Beckham and has no plans to import the 37-year-old star, according to a source who was briefed by club boss Zhu Jun about the issue.
“It was sheer rumour,” the source said. “Shenhua has no financial strength to sign another superstar.”
