Zhejiang Satellite TV’s New Year broadcast completely forgot about their headline act, Hong Kong singer Paul Wong (Paul Wong Koon-Chung or Huang Guanzhong, 黄贯中). Only after the event was over did he finally take to the stage to sing 10 songs to the stragglers in the audience.
The singer was forgotten backstage, not taking part in either the performance or the New Year countdown. When he finally took the stage, the photographers had packed up, staff began clearing up the crowd’s rubbish and technicians were dismantling the stage.
His band members were understandably furious but in true rock and roll spirit they carried on with the show.
The event organisers and Zhejiang Satellite TV at first made no comment on the epic slip up. Later Zhejiang Satellite TV’s Weibo account announced that:
1. The new year concert was a competition style showcase for The Voice of China contestants , not a celebrity style show, and that no other acts were invited to perform.
2. Mr Wong must have been invited by the program organisers to be a special guest at a live gig, but certainly had not requested to perform at Zhejiang satellite TV’s new year celebration itself.
3. Zhejiang Satellite TV never announced him as a special guest, the incident has clearly been hyped by the media to discredit the TV station and we retain the right to investigate this ourselves.
Peter Wong apologised to fans who had waited the whole evening to see him, demonstrating far more dignity than the cowards at Zhejiang STV.
