Zhang Yongming on trial in Kunming, July 2012.
China’s most notorious serial killer, Zhang Yongming, who murdered and dismembered at least 11 people, was executed on Thursday in Yunnan province, according to Kunming City Intermediate People’s Court.
Zhang was convicted in July 2012 of 11 counts of intentional homicide and sentenced to death. The murders took place between March 2008 and April 2012. Zhang would strangle his victims to death, chopping up the corpses in order to conceal his crime. Zhang was dubbed the ‘Cannibal Monster of Yunnan’ after it was revealed that he sold pieces of his victims’ flesh to unknowing shoppers at a local food market.
Zhang had been previously jailed for murder and released in 1997. He was 57.
