High school student Lai Zengyutong went missing on the night of January 12 in Shenzhen’s Baoan district, and her body was discovered the next day. The search for her attracted a lot of attention on Weibo, but netizens have now suggested that it was the student’s own Weibo account that led to her death.
Police found her body late on Sunday night in a junk shop, and an investigation is on going.
The high school girl would regularly post information about her location or daily life and hang outs on Weibo, information that netizens claim makes the microblogging portal into a ‘murder tool’. Unlike some social networking sites Weibo has very few security settings and anything that is posted is open to the public. This has not only sparked concerns over the safety of girls in general but particularly in their interactions online.
The loss of such a young girl has moved many netizens to post candles on her personal Weibo as a mark of respect and grief.
