Pencil This In is all the things you’d want to do this Monday through Thursday. This week we have two brand new art exhibition openings for you, one is all about large-scale installations (ShanghART), and the other one’s the latest LED art by island 6. Sub-Cinema brings you a good old HK Kung Fu movie, and Unico strikes back with a booking of DJ Questlove. Yup, THAT Questlove aka ?uestlove aka Ahmir Khalib Thompson from The Roots. Read on for all the details, or check out our calendar for more!
Things From the Gallery Warehouse 5 @ ShanghART
This brand new exhibition is like a jorney through an art gallery’s memories: Large-scale installations have been freed from the warehouse and dusted for another display at ShanghART. Works include “Summer 2009” by YANG Zhenzhong (last shown at “Shanghai History in Making from 1979 To 2009”, curated by Biljana Ciric); “Untitled – Drawer 1” by ZHANG Ding (shown at “Restless: Photography and New Media” at MoCA Shanghai in 2006) and “3600W” by CHEN Xiaoyun, a massive drawing on light tubes (shown at “Generations” exhibition at ShanghART H-Space in 2008). Exhibition till March 4.
Free // 10am – 6pm // Bldg 16, 50 Moganshan Lu, near Xi Suzhou Lu (莫干山路50号16号楼,近西苏州路)
Sub-Cinema: Shaolin Drunken Monk @ DADA
Apparently this 80’s Kung Fu flick from Hong Kong isn’t exactly known for it’s not so awesome script and theatrical performances, but for the soundtrack and adorable goofiness. Drunken monk for drunken audience. Pop corn on the house.
Free // Doors at 8pm, movie at 9pm // Dada // No. 115 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu (幸福路115号, 近法华镇路)
Questlove @ UNICO
Questlove puts out his feelers again, so if you wanna see the co-founder of legendary hip hop combo The Roots on the DJ pult, head over to Unico on the Bund! Here’s a link to some live mixes.
60RMB presale, 100RMB door // 10pm // UNïCO // Three on the Bund, 3 Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu, near Guangdong Lu (外滩3号, 中山东一路3号, 近广东路)
Need. Want. Hunt – Opening @ island 6
The new exhibition “Need. Want. Hunt.” of island 6 is dedicated to the basic instincts inside of us. True, most of us have put down bows and arrows and quite a few would even pass out if they’d have to gut their dinner themselves. But in the end, even life in a big city like Shanghai is dominated by feeding, courtship plumages and finding your own place. The opening is free, so head over to see island 6’s LED art take on instincts.
Free // 6-9pm // 50 Moganshan Lu, Bld 6, 2/F, near Changhua Lu and Xi Suzhou Lu, behind Aomen Lu (六岛, 莫干山路50号6号楼2楼, 近昌化路和西苏州路)
