An 87 year old man named Wang Wenxi stumbled and fell at a corner of his residential community in Chongqing. Wang struggled to get up by himself for five full minutes before security guards arrived to help him up. Footage from a surveillance camera shows that at least seven people witnessed him fall, and 45 walked past him without offering to help.
Among the 45 passersby, some threw Wang a glance; some went up, asked him a few questions then left; some even pretended to not see him and walked away swiftly. It was not until five minutes later that a woman, after some hesitation, decided to seek help from security guards nearby. Wang was soon accompanied by the guards back to his place.
In a subsequent interview at the hospital, Wang said his fall was due to a sudden loss of strength. Seeing that no one was willing to help, he wanted to get up himself but was unable to move. He was already in poor health, and lying outdoors in the cold for much longer could have endangered his life.
Security guard Liu Jian admitted to hesitating before assisting Wang, but for good reason. He suggested the reason why people held back was fear that they would be accused of physical abuse or theft. He recalled a personal experience, “Once we helped a senior citizen at about 10 pm. We took him back home but his family accused us of beating him. Police investigation later found that no such thing happened.” He became extra cautious since then, but his conscience urged him to help others whenever he could.
