Tourists in Disneyland California were treated to a unique sight last weekend, not only did they get to see the usual cavalcade of Disney characters, but Batman and blind Chinese dissident turned escape artist Chen Guangcheng as well!
The pair have become fast friends since Christian Bale attempted to visit Chen in December 2011, while the self-taught lawyer was under house arrest in Shandong, and got roughed up for his trouble. Bale also presented Chen the Human Rights Award on behalf of American NGO Human Rights First.
“He represents the people of China, the people that I met. He represents their hopes, their aspirations and their desire to be free from corruption and tyranny,” the British actor told the ceremony.
“He is a symbol of what an individual is capable of, no matter how humble his or her origins. He is in my opinion a giant among men,” Bale said.
Bale has a long connection with China, as a boy he starred in Steven Spielberg’s superb adaptation of JG Ballard’s semi-autobiographical novel Empire of the Sun. More recently, Bale was the only redeemable factor in the awful Flowers of War, a Chinese produced film directed by Zhang Yimou about the Rape of Nanjing, featuring cartoon Japanese baddies and insufferable Chinese prostitutes who behave like 6 year old girls.
