At her concert on Saturday 26 in Singapore, Taiwanese singer (and kick ass gay rights advocate) A-mei showed her support for gay rights by waving a rainbow flag as images of mixed and same-sex couples in the audience kissing were shown on a large screen. The sell out gig at Singapore Indoor Stadium is part of her ongoing tour: AMeiZING World Tour Live-Encore.
A-mei (real name Chang Hui-mei) has been a “Rainbow Ambassador” for the Taipei Gay Pride Parade since 2007. She was also the first Taiwanese celebrity to sign last year’s petition for same-sex marriage in Taiwan, also the theme of the 2012 Taipei Gay Pride.
Fridae reports that the gesture was very timely:
It was a much welcomed respite as two anti-gay pastors in Singapore lashed out on the gay community and called for the retention of gay sex laws in Singapore in recent weeks.
The AMeiZING World Tour started in September 2011 in Chengdu and has been going non-stop since around Asia and America. She is booked to play Chongqing, Dongguan and Hangzhou in March.
Maybe A-mei will wave her rainbow flag again in China – who’s taking bets?!
Watch: Images of kissing same-sex couples on the screen won loud cheers from the audience
