One half of Shanghai Shenhua’s star duo is officially gone. BBC Sport reports that Didier Drogba has signed an 18 month deal with Turkish side Galatasaray.
“I am looking forward to playing in the Champions League again,” Drogba wrote on Twitter, via his representatives.
The relationship between the 34 year old Ivorian striker and Shenhua had been on the rocks for a while — in November Drogba requested an exemption to the international transfer rules which would keep him in Shanghai until January 1. FIFA rejected the request.
Drogba’s former Chelsea teammate and Shenhua player-coach Nicolas Anelka is expected to follow suit soon. Over the weekend, the 33 year old French striker reportedly had a medical ahead of move on loan to Italian side Juventus.
As if that weren’t enough drama for Shenhua, rumors swirled late last month that team chairman Zhu Jun threatened to ditch Anelka, Drogba, and head coach Sergio Batista during a shareholders meeting. Insiders also say Zhu went as far as to claim he would move the club to another city.
