Every few days our team will scour Shanghai’s dining scene for scrumptious dishes that’ll fill your belly without emptying your savings. Not to discriminate, we’ll search everywhere from bicycle carts to chic venues with twenty-course tasting menus, knowing that any spot could have the next Dish of the Day.
Winter in Shanghai goes hand-in-hand with edibles on skewers. And when it comes to speared eats, our go-tos aren’t uyghur kebabs or those radioactive wombat appendixes on sticks they hawk outside clubs at 3am, but rather the skewers at yakitori hotspot, Kota’s Kitchen. Which ones? All of them, but we’ll narrow it down to our faves. And yeah yeah, they love the Beatles here, let’s get to the skewers.
Like most yakitori joints, Kota’s Kitchen serves almost every chicken part on a stick from chicken wings to chicken gizzards. We’re partial to the chicken hearts (10RMB), which pump out livery juice when you bite down, and the crackling chicken skin, which is like getting to eat Mom’s Sunday roast without that arid breast meat. Seriously, I wish I had a tarpaulin made of the stuff.
The beef tongues are pretty darn good as well, and if that’s too Silence of the Lambs for you, there’s the classic pork belly (15RMB). Sizzling and striped with bacon-y fat, it’s succulence on a stick.
And if we could only eat one more skewer, we’d pick the grilled camembert. We know, it sounds like something you’d find at some backwoods county fair in the US and one bite of it probably makes your blood flow slower than maple syrup, but trust us, it’s one of the most delicious skewers in Shanghai proper. Times the best grilled cheese sandwich you’ve ever had by a hundred, subtract the bread, and you get the idea.
Kota’s skewers may set you back a few yuan more than street meat or all-you-can-eat-yakitori, but this is one instance in Shanghai where paying twice as much gets you twice the tastiness.
