Fu’s mother presses a manual respirator
In March 2006, Fu Xuepeng was involved in a traffic accident which left him paralyzed from the neck down and unable to breathe on his own. After four months of full time hospital care, his parents, unable to afford the cost of his care, were forced to take him home.
For the first seven months after he left the hospital, Fu’s parents kept him alive with a manually operated breathing device which they had to push 18-20 times a minute. During these months, Fu’s parents pressed the breather around 5.7 million times by hand.
Unable to afford hospital care or an automatic breathing machine which would have cost 100,000 yuan, in April 2009 the dedicated parents created their own breathing machine which has since freed up their hands and kept Fu Xuepeng alive for the past four years.
