Former Hong Kong politician and rival of top dog CY Leung, Henry Tang, has announced the auction of part of his multi-million dollar wine collection, after an illegal wine cellar was found at his home last year.
The auction of 810 lots of burgundy wine is expected to rake in US$3.74 million. Hong Kong became a hub for wine merchants after Tang, a well known wine connoisseur, removed duties on wine imports in 2008.
The auction will be run by Christies over two days in March. Included in the collection are 12 bottles of 1978 DRC Montrachet estimated to be worth HK$400,000-600,000.
The politician lost out to CY Leung in the Chief Executive elections last year after admissions of marital infidelity and the discovery of an illegal cellar in his house containing wine, a home gym and Japanese bath.
Ironically Leung was later also involved in a housing scandal after illegal structures were found at his luxury home.
