A 19 year old man who scratched at least 11 cars with keys and stones near Xujiahui has been given two years and six months in prison with a 30 month reprieve, the Xuhui District People’s Court ruled Tuesday.
The man, surnamed Wu, a migrant worker, said he scratched only cars parked in a residential complex on Guiyi Road because he thought one of the cars had knocked him down on July 8. He said he couldn’t recall the car’s look or its plate since he was drunk.
“I saw the car driving into the complex. I was in a terrible mood because I just quarreled with my father and was hit by a car,” Wu said. He scratched several cars that day and returned to scratch more in the next three months.
“I felt a pleasant sensation when scratching the cars and all my bad feelings were gone,” Wu said.
Damages totaled 25,000 yuan (US$4,010), the court said.
Wu may have vandalised as many as 20 cars, but authorities were only able to find evidence for 11. Wu was lucky to get off with such a lenient sentence, as anyone who has had their car keyed knows, the only fitting punishment for the perpetrator is to have their limbs tied to wild horses and be ripped apart.
