Authorities in Yunnan are investigating claims that airport police used pepper spray to subdue unruly passengers during an altercation Sunday, according to the People’s Daily.
The incident began when Lucky Air staff announced that a flight bound for Nanjing would be cancelled because of heavy fog. Passengers grew angry, and witnesses say that a group of 20 to 30 people attempted to rush the departure gate and forcibly board the plane. Police allegedly used pepper spray to subdue the crowd, with the altercation causing several other flights to be delayed.
Kunming’s airport previously saw clashes between police and irate passengers last month, when customer service desks were mobbed after over 300 flights were cancelled due to bad weather.
