Psy, the South Korean popstar who has dominated every internet outlet from Youtube to Weibo, was the headline event at Shanghai-based Dragon TV’s Spring Festival Gala on Sunday night.
Sunday was the first time the horse-dancing maestro, last seen in Shanghai dancing to promote Bean’s Pretty in Pink Breast Cancer awareness drive, had appeared on Chinese television. This apparently required Psy teach the presenters and the audience how to do a dance that’s been viewed over one billion times (literally).
My colleague Anthony Tao over at Beijing Cream says the “tepid earnestness and assembly-line enthusiasm” of the entire display represents the moment the Gangnam Style shark was officially jumped. This is obviously wrong since (a) as much as I still love the song, Gangnam Style jumped the shark a long time ago; and (b) this is China, Celine Dion headlined the national broadcaster’s official new year’s gala with a song from a (terrible) film that came out in 1997. Finless sharks can’t be jumped.
