A man seeking revenge against his ex-wife set off explosives in a car parked outside her family home in a village outside the coastal city of Zhanjiang, Guangdong province on Wednesday, according to the China Daily.
Seven people were killed and 18 injured, including the man who admitted to setting off the blast, identified by his surname Chen. Police say he is currently in a coma after passing out in the aftermath of the explosion.
The explosion damaged several homes in the neighborhood, including Zhao Yawei’s house, which is located at least 50 meters away.
“I was working in the fields when I heard a bang and saw dark smoke in the sky,” said Zhao. “When I ran home, I saw our window panes were broken and my son’s feet were bleeding — he was hurt by broken glass.”
Police say that most of the casualties were relatives of Chen’s ex-wife who had come to visit for the holidays. Police chief Liu Benquan told the China Daily that the bombing was an act of revenge following an argument over the custody of the couple’s children.
