Local media are reporting on the story of a naked man who, under the influence of drugs, wandered onto a busy Jiangxi airport runway after a family argument. The man’s bracing evening stroll caused the runway to be shut for nearly an hour, delaying flights during the busy Spring Festival travel period.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening, when staff at Nanchang’s Changbei International Airport were notified at around 10pm that a man had been spotted on the airport’s one runway. All inbound and outbound flights were stopped and a search was begun.
The man was eventually discovered at 10:44pm, naked, and clearly high on something. The Shanghai Daily quotes an airport security guard as saying: “The man was naked, crouching inside a ditch beside the runway when the airport police found him,” Early reports say that the man lived in a nearby village and had broken through the perimeter fence after a domestic dispute. The man was fined and detained whilst the investigation continued.
Flights were eventually resumed but eleven flights were delayed, including one flight from Guangzhou that had to turn around and return to Guangdong because it couldn’t land.
The Jining Daily points out that it is not the first time that something like this has happened at the Jiangxi airport. Last October an elderly villager from Fuzhou, a nearby metropolitan county, crossed perimeter fences because “he wanted to get a closer look at the aircraft”. His curiosity also caused large delays and resulted in him being issued a large fine.
