North Korea has been very naughty and now the world is looking to China to punish them. Will they be grounded for a month? Will their allowance be withheld? Or is it to be chores for Kim Jong-un? Such a naughty little tyke!
Since the DPRK announced plans for more nuclear tests within the year, after the success of their third nuclear test last week, the international community has condemned its reckless behaviour. The US, Japan, South Korea and the European Union have all announced plans to impose tough sanctions on North Korea and are pressuring China to follow suit. China is currently standing back and looking determinedly at the ceiling.
China needs to punish North Korea, but if they are too harsh then they may turn from ‘avuncular neighbour’ to ‘Enemy No. 1’ in the eyes of the DPRK. If North Korea was your neighbour, casually testing nuclear weapons in their backyard, would you want to piss them off?
The Global Times advises:
The reduction in China’s assistance to North Korea shouldn’t be more prominent than the increase in sanctions by the US, Japan and South Korea. This should be the bottom line for China to participate in international sanctions against North Korea.
China should stick to being a mediator in the nuclear issue, and not join any side to confront the other. It’s possible that tensions on the peninsula will further escalate and a war could break out. China should prepare itself for any extreme situations, which is important for it to safeguard its security and not be held hostage by either side.
