Villagers in the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan province had some unexpected guests over Spring Festival. Elephants living in the nearby jungle stormed into five villages, damaging property and crops.
According to In Kunming, the elephants came into the villages to forage for food after a female member of the herd gave birth.
“The wild elephants kept walking in front of my house. I was too frightened to fall asleep,” said Lei Anqing, a local villager.
Some of the elephants “attacked” a house in which corn was stored. The couple had to break a window to escape. The police eventually scared the elephants away by setting off firecrackers (don’t get excited, this is probably not the reason you’ve been hearing firecrackers going off for a week straight).
