A senior executive in the Chinese Football Association (CFA) has told Xinhua that perennial football gossip magnet David Beckham is likely to become the ‘international ambassador’ for the upcoming 2013 Chinese Super League (CSL).
Zhu Qilin, who also works for IMG Asia and CCTV, said that it is “almost certain” (translation: not at all certain) that Beckham will be the new CSL international ambassador, but that some procedures still need to be done (such as convincing him to take the job).
Football’s most recognisable face will not attend the opening ceremony of the new CSL season. “We planned to invite him, but as he will be busy preparing for the European Champions League at the time, so I don’t think he can come,” Zhu said.
Beckham is currently contracted to French Ligue 1 club Paris St Germain for five months, having left MLS side LA Galaxy last year. The ex-England captain was for a time (falsely) linked to financially beleaguered Shanghai Shenhua.
