After repeated attempts to bring their petition to top officials through regular channels, one village in Hebei has turned to the supernatural.
Residents of Tuanlinzhen say that four sailors from their village working out of nearby Qinhuangdao died after being forced out into dangerous waters by their boss. When the government refused to receive their appeals for redress, the villagers last week built a small temple and enshrined traditional placards and photos representing Qinhaungdao’s Party secretary, mayor, CCP political and legal committee chief.
Kneeling and burning incense, their actions quickly gained the attention of city officials, who have already sent representatives to discuss compensation and legal measures.
