Calls for boycotts of resorts in the Maldives have begun to spread around Weibo after revelations that some luxury resorts have stopped serving hot water to Chinese patrons so as to prevent them from eating cup noodles. This story originated from Zhao Jianke, a former guest service manager of The Beach House Iruveli, a five star resort on the small island in the Indian Ocean.
Apparently, staff were told to deny Chinese boiled water after the hotel got a new manager intent on increasing revenue from room service. The manager also reportedly referred to China as “cup noodle” in private conversations with employees. The Maldives is only the most recent victim of the wrath of Chinese netizens.
The Phillipines, Japan, and France have all recently been the target of travel boycotts by enraged netizens. This is, however, the first instant noodle related country boycott. Switzerland is purported to be the next target of netizens, after a disgruntled employee of Swissôtel revealed that the hotel had refused to stock
eye poison baijiu in its hotel minibars.
