A video clip has been circulating among Chinese netizens, showing clashes between street vendors and chengguan, China’s urban management enforcement officers, in Gulangyu island, off the coast of Xiamen, Fujian province, earlier this week.
In the video, chengguan officers beat a vendor after an argument. An officer shouts at the vendor, “Haven’t you ever died, right?”
Some passersby attempt to mediate between the two parties, and some try to stop chengguan from fighting.
A chengguan officer told the People’s Daily that the vendor beat one of them with an iron bar, and their following conduct was in justifiable defence of their fellow officer.
The police said they have investigated the event, and found both chengguan and vendor were injured, with one officer suffering an unspecified bone fracture.
