China has been running the world’s largest and most successful eugenics program for more than thirty years, driving China’s ever-faster rise as the global superpower. I worry that this poses some existential threat to Western civilization.
Miller first goes on to prove that he knows the pinyin for several Chinese words, and then alleges that the Chinese One Child Policy is an elaborate eugenics plan that works by allowing rich people to have several babies while preventing others from having more.
He clarifies his ‘superbabies’ claim in his recent interview with Vice. He points to a Chinese company called BGI Shenzhen that is analyzing the genomes of people with high IQs as the precursor to technology that will people to select for smart children. He argues that in studying genetics the US is years behind, and though he stops short of evoking Genghis Khan, he leaves little doubt that he imagines the future as a Chinese remake of Gattaca with some Mad Max mixed in.
I will avoid going on a page-long tirade (although Hugh Grigg has a good one), because you should know why this argument is fundamentally bullshit. The one child policy doesn’t work the way Miller says it does; rural people and racial minorities are explicitly allowed to have more children than prosperous, urban Han. There’s also a difference between studying intelligence and creating a race of superbabies. Finally, the US isn’t “pretty far behind” on research in genetics.
However, I will insist on wagging my finger at Vice for uncritically re-reporting the kind of racist garbage that those of us who know and care about China always hate to see highlighted in the Western press. Here’s the racist straw man you have always been looking for. Pick up the intellectual baseball bats and go wild.
