Olympic hurdler Liu Xiang is one of 23 athletes who will be insured for life thanks to the government’s largesse.
The Shanghai Sports Bureau recently signed a contract to guarantee lifetime health insurance for 23 local athletes, including Olympic champion Liu Xiang.
The free health insurance covers all basic health requirements, including catching a cold, fever, injury, or dental care. Four coaches also included in the generous plan.
The authority has not revealed how the coverage is being funded. This policy was implemented by Shanghai Sports Bureau, Human Resources and Social Security, Finance Bureau and Administration of Civil Service.
News of the free insurance has sparked a heated discussion among the public and media because some believe the authority may have dolled out privileges to a small group of people from a fund supported by all taxpayers.
