At least three broadcasters — KBS, MBC and YTN — and two banks — Shinhan Bank and Nonghyup — reported to the National Police Agency (NPA) that their computer networks were entirely halted around 2 p.m. for unknown reasons, police said.
South Korea has accused North Korea of carrying out a series of cyber attacks on the web sites of government agencies and financial institutions over the past few years, though the North denied the allegations.
A major daily newspaper was attacked by North Korean hackers in June 2012, while Nonghyup’s computer networks crashed in September 2010 apparently under attack from the North, according to prosecutors and police.
Tensions on the Korean peninsula are incredibly high at present following the North’s apparently successful nuclear test in February and the cancelling, by the DPRK, of the armistice and non-aggression pacts which ended the Korean War.
