Chinese people have received a lot of flack in recent years for ignoring or simply taking photos of those in distress. Commentators wrung their hands over the dearth of Chinese good samaritans, especially when foreigners were shaming the nation by rescuing people while local onlookers just gawped and took photos. Never fear, as the above video demonstrates, the instinct to help one’s fellow man is alive and well in China.
A Chongqing University student jumped into Minzhu lake after a suicidal classmate tried to drown herself, he succeeded in pulling her out of the water, after which she was taken to hospital by university staff.
The male student, once a member of the Binzhou professional swimming team said he considered himself to be a good swimmer, but had no rescue or lifesaving experience. Asked if he had any doubts about following the girl into the water he told reporters, “my first thought was to jump in and save her”.
