A primary school in Zhuhai has attracted online outrage after a parent revealed that students were being charged a one yuan fee if they wanted to take a nap at lunch time.
After lunch, students have time in which to do homework or take a nap. If they want to nap in their classroom they have to pay the one yuan fee, effectively a mandatory fee as most of the children live too far away to walk home during lunch.
The school admitted that it had been charging students to nap since September 2010, administrators justified the fee saying it had been approved by the Guangdong Education Bureau.
Though parents were mostly resigned to paying the fee, netizens have expressed their outrage online. The original report has been forwarded over 10,000 times on Weibo.
